Matter report: a relationship-led investment and a disputed withdrawal charge
An invented $185,000 investment matter shows how a legal team could separate the client’s payments, platform claims and technical findings.
The assumed instructions
In this matter, a client developed an online relationship with a person who recommended a digital asset investment platform. Over several months, the client transferred cryptocurrency purchased through a separate exchange. The platform later displayed a balance of $312,000 but demanded a further $24,000 before permitting a withdrawal.
The client’s stated objective was to understand the legal position, avoid further payments and assess whether an evidence-based route against identifiable parties was proportionate. The displayed balance was recorded as a platform representation, rather than accepted as a verified amount held for the client.
The work described in the scenario
Following a free initial review with no firm retainer, the team assembled a chronology from message exports, payment records, withdrawal requests and platform terms. Each payment was reconciled to a transaction reference and the instruction that prompted it. The difference between the actual funds transferred and the amount shown on the platform was preserved throughout the analysis.
A separately scoped independent technical specialist was instructed, with client authority, to examine the relevant transactions. The report distinguished observed on-chain movements from tentative wallet labels and possible platform connections. Counsel then reviewed those findings against the correspondence and the identity evidence.
The legal decision points
The central questions were which person or entity made the representations, whether the platform operator could be identified reliably, where an appropriate claim might be brought and whether further records could be sought through an available process. A wallet movement alone did not resolve those questions. Any proposed preservation or disclosure step required its own basis and the involvement of the party or authority capable of acting.
What the matter produced
The engagement concluded its assessment phase with an indexed evidence bundle, a reconciled payment schedule, an annotated technical report and a written options memorandum. The memorandum set out unresolved identity questions, possible next instructions and estimated work stages. No actual court order, asset freeze, recovery or settlement is claimed.
The practical lesson is to retain the distinction between what the client paid, what the platform displayed and what independent evidence establishes. Read the extended hypothetical case study for the full sequence.
